History

Wind Tower Systems (WTS) was founded in Utah in 2002 with the goal of developing and commercializing lighter weight, modular taller wind turbine towers for utility scale wind turbines. In 2003 the company received grants totaling $850,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Low Wind Speed Technology Program to conduct research and development work on economic taller towers. An additional $3,100,000 matching grant ($1.511 million grant proceeds) from the California Energy Commission enabled further development and cost optimization activities of the new tower and crawler-crane free Your browser may not support display of this image. systems with a commercial turbine.

In March 2007, the company received a significant Series A investment from Element Partners, a leading energy venture firm. The funding provided operating capital to commercialize taller Space Frame towers and provide availability under license and manufacturing arrangements to several global turbine suppliers. The funding also supported further commercialization activities for the Hi-Jack Lifting System and associated marketing activities.

Technology Mission

WTS provides innovative, taller wind turbine towers and crawler-crane free lifting systems that reduce winds cost of energy by 5% to 12%. The ability to economically capture winds at greater height enables development of up to 20-time more sites per NREL data. For remote locations such as the less industrialized geographies and islands, utility-scale wind projects are made economic for the first time.

The company continues to advance the state of the art with lighter weight, Space Frame towers for use in deep water offshore turbines as well as use in floating platforms where weight is paramount.
